Turning Field Data into Meaningful Change: Centre for Social Justice is Hiring a Data Analyst (Research & Impact)

Behind every data point in social justice work is a person: someone who sought legal aid, attended a paralegal training, or waited for their case to move forward. The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) is looking for a Data Analyst in Ahmedabad who understands that, and who can turn those numbers and stories into insight that shapes decisions.

About CSJ

CSJ is a socio-legal organisation working to ensure access to justice for marginalised and vulnerable communities. Its work spans grassroots legal aid centres, paralegal programmes, and trainings across multiple states in India.

Why This Role Matters

CSJ's field interventions generate a lot of information, in two forms:

  • Quantitative data on cases and programmes, captured through Avni, an open-source platform.

  • Qualitative data: Field Office Reports that document ground realities, context, and nuance.

The Data Analyst bridges this field data and institutional decision-making. The job is to clean, organise, synthesise, and analyse both streams, and to use Advanced Excel to turn raw field inputs into trackers, dashboards, thematic summaries, and programmatic insights.

What You Will Do

1. Manage and clean quantitative data. Extract, validate, and organise datasets from Avni, spot entry gaps and inconsistencies, work with field teams to fix them, and maintain central tracking sheets across locations and time periods.

2. Analyse and report in Excel. Identify trends, performance metrics, and operational insights. Build and maintain automated trackers, summary templates, and formulas for recurring reporting, and cross-tabulate variables to track community reach, case progression, and programme milestones.

3. Synthesise qualitative data. Draw key themes from Field Office Reports and case narratives, and combine them with quantitative metrics to give a full picture of impact and challenges.

4. Build dashboards and visuals. Design clear Excel dashboards, charts, and summary decks for leadership and field reviews, and present findings in periodic review meetings to guide strategy.

5. Support field coordination and quality. Visit field offices occasionally to understand data collection challenges first-hand, and orient field staff on good data entry practices in Avni and on reporting formats.

Who Should Apply

  • Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Analytics, Economics, Statistics, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Commerce, or a related field.

  • Experience: 2 to 5 years of hands-on work with datasets. Experience in non-profits, research organisations, or development programmes is an added advantage.

  • Excel skills: Advanced command of XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables and Charts, Conditional Formatting, Data Validation, nested formulas, and dashboard creation.

  • Analytical mindset: Attention to detail and the ability to make sense of both numbers and narrative reports.

  • Communication: Good written and spoken English. Working knowledge of Gujarati and/or Hindi is highly preferred for field coordination.

What CSJ Offers

  • Work with grassroots socio-legal data that informs access to justice for vulnerable communities.

  • A supportive, mission-driven environment with long-term stability and room to learn.

  • Remuneration in line with non-profit sector standards and your experience.
