Aangan Trust Is Hiring a Program Associate to Mentor Adolescent Girls and Build Safer Communities
Location: Kolkata (West Bengal), Bihar and Jharkhand | Openings: 1
Aangan Trust is looking for a Program Associate for its adolescent girls’ programme. The role is for someone who wants to work with girls in a way that builds confidence, connection, and leadership, rather than teaching in a classroom.
About Aangan and the Girls’ Programme
Aangan works with children and adolescents in high-risk contexts such as child marriage, trafficking, hazardous work, and abuse. Its prevention approach strengthens community and system responses so that children, especially girls, are safer, heard, and supported.
The adolescent girls’ programme builds girl-led peer networks. Girls connect with one another, talk openly about safety as a shared reality, and create Safety Updates that reflect what they see and experience in their own communities.
What This Role Is (and Isn’t)
The posting is clear that this is not a classroom role. It is a facilitation and mentoring role rooted in trust, creativity, and long-term relationship-building. The Program Associate works closely with adolescent girls over time while the girls take the lead and the associate guides the way.
Aangan asks candidates to reflect on four questions:
Do you enjoy supporting girls to lead, rather than instructing them?
Do you believe confidence grows through connection, not lectures?
Can you make sessions engaging, fun, and creative?
Can you help girls turn their everyday experiences into collective safety content and action?
Key Responsibilities
Mentor Girl Safety Leaders (GSLs) and help them form and sustain inclusive peer cohorts grounded in trust, confidentiality, and mutual respect.
Facilitate reflective, girl-centred spaces where safety issues are discussed openly as shared realities, without pressuring girls to disclose personal harm.
Support GSLs in documenting local safety risks through Mohalla Safety Updates, using creative and responsible formats, both offline and digital.
Coach girls to identify patterns, early warning signs, and protective strategies, strengthening safety awareness, digital and financial readiness, and help-seeking behaviours.
Connect cohorts and networks to encourage peer learning, shared voice, and collective confidence.
Engage families, schools, frontline workers, and community leaders to strengthen supportive ecosystems around girls without compromising their autonomy.
Document field learning, contribute to programme reflection, and support monitoring that prioritises quality of participation over numeric compliance.
Navigate context-specific challenges around mobility, access, consent, and safety in urban and peri-urban Bihar.
What Aangan Expects
Experience
At least 3 years of hands-on experience working directly with adolescent girls or youth, preferably in community settings.
At least 2 years of experience in child protection, gender, adolescence, or community-based programmes, with an understanding of gender and safety.
Experience engaging with local systems such as schools, police, Panchayats, or frontline workers is a strong advantage.
Skills and approach
Strong facilitation and mentoring skills, including the ability to listen deeply, ask the right questions, and support young people without directing or controlling them.
Ability to design and run creative sessions with innovative tools that keep girls excited to participate.
Comfort with participatory, open-ended processes where outcomes emerge over time, rather than fixed scripts.
Language and logistics
Fluency in Hindi and working proficiency in English, including basic documentation and communication.
Willingness and flexibility to travel within Bihar as required.
Who Should Apply
Candidates with experience in adolescent development, child protection, gender, and community engagement are encouraged to apply. The role suits people who are patient, creative, and comfortable letting young people lead.
